Vidya Balan joins as the new member of the CBFC while Pahlaj Nihalani was sacked as the organisation’s chairman
On Friday, the National Award-winning actress Vidya Balan was appointed as part of the reconstituted Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), to be now chaired by writer Prasoon Joshi.
The development came on the same day as the Pahlaj Nihalani was sacked as the CBFC chief and his post was filled by adman, lyricist Prasoon Joshi.
Vidya Balan, who made her Bollywood debut in Parineeta (2005) is known for her movies including The Dirty Picture, Paa and Kahaani. She is married to film producer Siddharth Roy Kapur. She looks forward to a phase where cinema celebrates present-day sensibilities and realities.
“I am very happy to join the CBFC and I hope to fulfil my responsibilities as a member to the best of my abilities. I look forward to this new and exciting phase where our cinema will be allowed to reflect the sensibilities, realities and the complexities of the society we are living in today,” Vidya said in a statement.
Meanwhile, the CBFC has been reconstituted for a period of three years or until further orders, whichever is earlier. The board now comprises of 12 other members apart from Vidya Balan.
Vidya is joined by Gautami Tadimalla, Narendra Kohli, Naresh Chandra Lal, Neil Herbert Nongkynrih, Vivek Agnihotri, Waman Kendre, TS Nagabharana, Ramesh Patange, Vani Tripati Tikoo, Jeevitha Rajasekhar and Mihir Bhuta.
That Vidya Balan is a good actress with the ability to perform many different type of roles, whether it is in mainstream films or more offbeat ones, is a widely held opinion. What can be predicted based on her career thus far is that she is a good pick for the board, which had been suffering from bureaucratic, corruption-related issues in the midst of longstanding attempts to amend The Cinematograph Act.
