Shubh Mangal Saavdhan Review – Intelligent amalgamation of a good script and decent acting.

Shubh Mangal Saavdhan Movie Review – Ayushmann Khurrana’s dysfunction will leave you excited

Shubh Mangal Saavdhan Cast: Ayushmann Khurrana, Bhumi Pednekar, Chittaranjan Tripathy, Neeraj Sood, Seema Pahwa, Brijendra Kala

Shubh Mangal Saavdhan Director: RS Prasanna

Shubh Mangal Saavdhan Rating: 3.5/5

The flick marks the debut of director RS Prasanna. Interestingly, ‘Shubh Mangal Saavdhan’ is the official remake of a Tamil Movie ‘Kalyana Samayal Saadham’.

Shubh Mangal Saavdhan Story:

The storyline revolves around an NCR boy Mudit Sharma (Ayushmann) who suddenly starts suffering from erectile dysfunction after getting engaged to Sugandha (Bhumi). If you find the subject of the flick interesting enough, then wait further. The real fun begins when the families of Ayushmann-Bhumi indulge in wedding celebrations and, this is when, the flavour of middle-class festivities comes out at its very best. Matters quickly escalate to the point where entire extended families become aware of the ‘problem’, and just days away from their marriage the tense couple is still struggling to make things work.

Admirably, the makers navigate this tricky material without it coming across as crass or making you squirm in your seat. There’s also genuine warmth and heart in the relationship between Mudit and Sugandha, and the script gives them enough room to explore ideas of commitment and adjustment while going through the messiness of love and marriage. There are a lot of LOL moments spilled throughout the film. Especially in the first-half, you will get to witness a realistic touch to the storytelling. There is no denying the fact that Ayushmann and Bhumi have portrayed their characters brilliantly.

Bhumi Pednekar is excellent as a young woman whose response to her partner’s shortcoming is both surprising and mature. She’s on a roll, following up her confident, fiery performance in last month’s Toilet: Ek Prem Katha with another winning turn.

And Khurrana once again is in fine fettle: from a brawny Punjabi fertile Aryan ‘puttar’ that he plays in Vicky Donor to a fellow who can’t, he’s inhabited both ends of spectrum, showing no performance anxiety at all. The people who need to be commended here are the supporting actors of the movie. With stars like Beijendra Kala and Seema Pahwa, the filmmaker has added to the authenticity of the script. he verbal jostle between Sugandha’s father (Chittaranjan Tripathy) and his elder brother (Brijendra Kalra) provides genuine moments of mirth as the brothers bicker over money, values and relations. Seema Pahwa as Sugandha’s concerned mother is a standout, walking away with the film’s most amusing scene in which she talks poetry and innuendo without missing a beat.

If we talk about the screenplay, the movie fails to maintain the pace at times. Even the climax of the flick was a bit indigestible keeping in mind the tone which the director had set. But, hats off to Prasanna for giving an excellent treatment to a topic like this.

Final Verdict:

Shubh Mangal Saavdhan rises above its minor problems to deliver plenty laughs. It’s one of the year’s most enjoyable films.
