TellyDhamaal tries to understand why this movie called “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)” won four Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Cinematography while being nominated for nine Oscars.
So In this movie, Michael Keaton plays former blockbuster movie star Riggan Thomson – remembered best for portraying comic book hero Birdman on the big screen (back in the 1990s).
Fast forward two decades and Thomson is no longer the big shot he was.
Now being totally Broke, separated from his wife (Amy Ryan), estranged from his rebellious daughter (Emma Stone), and forgotten by his once adoring fans, Thomson sets out to prove that he’s not just a dead actor – opting to write, direct, and star in a Broadway show based on the Raymond Carver story “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love”.
Written and directed by Oscar-nominee Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (for Babel) and he also did 21 grams, Birdman is a bittersweet portrait of a Hollywood has-been desperate for a second go-round in the limelight.
Admirably daring and filled with wonderfully vivid performances (Keaton grabs his comeback lifebuoy with both hands, while Norton and Stone almost steal the show with their combustible chemistry), Birdman also feels at times more like an exercise in style than a genuine emotional experience.
Whether it’s the self-reflexive script, uninterrupted takes, or the grinding, cacophonous drum score by Antonio Sanchez, there’s the distinct feeling that everybody is trying a little too hard, and that everything is too studied and self-conscious.
While that’s no crime, Birdman could definitely have used more heart and less head.
TellyDhamaal gives this movie a rating of 7 /10 and it’s in movie theaters right now.
