Pehredaar Piya Ki latest news – With the recent sequences focusing on the suhaag raat and honeymoon of the 10-year-old kid and his 18-year-old wife, the show caused a public outcry
Sony TV’s recently launched show Pehredaar Piya Ki was infamous for its story line from the start, actually even before it started.
The show brings to the audience a never-seen-before story of a nine-year-old boy getting married to an 18-year-old girl. The marriage is not for love nor any compromise, but only because the girl has promised the boy’s dying father to be his lifelong pehredaar (protector).
The show stars Tejasswi Prakash and Afaan Khan as Diya and Ratan in lead roles.
The team of Pehredar Piya Ki is undeterred by the negative reactions and the recent episodes that highlighted the suhaag raat and how the young kid enjoys filling his wife’s forehead with sindoor has raised many eyebrows. The cringe-worthy scenes have caused a public outcry.
A petition on change.org addressed to Smriti Zubin Irani, Union Cabinet Minister of Textiles and Information and Broadcasting (Additional Charge), called for a ban on the show. The petitioner, who now has 36,282 signatures (and counting) in support, wrote: “A 10-year-old impressionable little kid (“piyaa“) caressing and stalking a lady who’s more than double his age and filling sindoor in her “maang” is being telecasted at prime time, family time. Imagine the kind of influence it will steadily and perpetually infuse in the viewers’ mindset. We want a ban on the serial. We do not want our kids to be influenced by such TV serials.”
The team of Pehredaar Piya Ki though is unmoved by the act as they believe that their show is not what people are assuming it to be.
Defending the show, Tejaswi Prakash, who plays the role of Diya (the Pehredaar of the title) told news agency IANS that it is in fact a ‘progressive’ show. She said: “I think it’s really progressive. But again, a lot of people believe in judging a book by its cover. They love being judgmental and people have nothing better to do than judging somebody else’s work. Then okay, what can I do?”
“I feel it’s just a story and fiction. It’s just a story that we are telling people. So how can you judge any story? You like it okay, you don’t like it, so, you don’t like it. We are not professors, we are not trying to teach you anything,” she added.
Tejaswi also drew a comparison between the show to the most popular American fantasy drama “Game of Thrones”.
“It also happened in ‘Game Of Thrones’… People love ‘Game Of Thrones’ and if same thing happens in ‘Pehredaar Piya Ki’, then it’s an issue,” she added.
So, is all the criticism of the show affecting Tejaswi?
“No, I’m an actor. I just get my script, go on the set and I perform. Honestly, I’m not on a lot of social sites to be aware of any such comments… I am only active on Instagram. Nobody calls and says anything to me. It’s probably the creatives… They should talk to the creatives about the criticism,” said Tejaswi, who was also seen in Swaragini.
